Hey guys,
My main twink's name is Evocate but everyone calls me Evo.. so thats largely what I will go by. Anyways, I have been reading about how much of a demand there is for a gold guide so I figured I would try to explain the process by which I play the AH. Its not going to be in the same fold as your traditional guide, because I will be embarking on my old making gold journey and I will give you updates on my progress, and what I have done as much as I possible can. That being said you probably want to know what makes this guide so different from all the rest. In my opinion most guides tell you buy this, buy that, always sell high etc.. I am going to guide you through MY thought processes on what I buy.
So that being said lets begin.
What you should have on you before you begin. A lvl 10 character that serves as your banker, this should not be a character you get on often, so do not make it a lvl 10 twink no matter how badly you want to.
Second, have something to write notes on. People that have offered to make you things daily, people that do things for free.. etc. You may also find it nice to write down trends and possible new scoops that you dont want to forget are up on the AH, or will be .. and so on.
Finally you need a start up of gold. While it is possible to start with 1, it is infinitely harder to make a lot of money when you have a low threshold by which you can buy things.
So heres what I started with.
-1000 gold.
-5 dreadstone's
-1 king's amber
So.. the first day I sold the gems, at around 200 each though some went a bit lower, so lets round that to an even 1100. So now I have 2100 gold to start playing around with.
The first thing I looked at is my perennial favorite; netherweave. This holds its value well in terms of other cloth because the bags on my server are ALWAYS above 10g. I made a macro to buy stacks for 5g each yielding a 4g 50 s profit (50s for the rune thread). Now I am lucky in that the guilds I have been in are the top PvP guild and the second highest PvE guild respectively so I have access to a lot of free professions but work with what you have, you may have to give a 1g tip or something). So, I spam this macro and I get an offer, 300g buys me 130 bolts of netherweave (20 netherweave =4 bolts). I think about whether I want to invest in so much so quickly and I decide netherweave does sell relatively quickly so it might be useful to do so. I go ahead and buy all of them. 130 bolts at 4 per bag is 32 bags. 32 x 12 = 384g -16g for the money for the rune thread which is 368g, a 68g profit. And some of these bags did sell higher then 12g but I like to keep things even for my readers. So now I decide to start heavily investing in things. I spam a macro saying I will buy cloth CDs (moonweave, ebonweave, spellweave) and alchemy transmutations (making regular gems into epic gems). I also buy 40 eternal shadows, 40 eternal lifes, 20 eternal airs, and I buy enough frostweave/infinite dust to make 60 imbued frostweave. When I do this I realize the prices of enchant mats have dropped really really low. Like, I bought stacks of infinite dust for 30g.. which is ridiculously cheap. I also bought frostweave stacks for 3g - 7g.. which is amazing. I am going to be looking into frostweave bags which go for 45 g on my server and see how much money I can make there some time in the future. Anyway, continuing with what I buy; I also buy 20 of every blue gem except for the green one of which I buy 60 (3 of them = Eye of Zul).
Here I make my first mistake! I buy 8 of a blue gem *Noble Topaz* which isnt actually one of the blue gems due to the haste and carelessness by which I buy them. So.. the lesson here is that you need to write these things down so you always have something to look at. That being said I luck out, the cut gems are going for 20g or so on the AH.. and thats still a profit...so wth we will see if they sell (I doubt it =P).
Anyway after spamming the macro for a while I get some tailors and some alchemists who agree to my 30g tip to tailors and 20g tip to alchemists. Furthermore, most of them agree to doing this for me daily after hearing me refer to it as a quick and easy 20g daily to start their day off (make sure you sugarcoat so it seems like they are winning!). That means I will have a good income in the future every single day! So lets do some quick math to see what I made. Eternal Lifes are around 20g each, the yellow gem was like 10g so thats 30g total. Then, add 20g tip so thats 50g. And thats the second most expensive gem, the others are way cheaper. So I sold the gem for 210g, thats a 160g profit! With the tailoring CD's .. its eternal life x 2 so 40g.. and one imbued cloth which was around 5g or so so 45g and it sold for 125g, which is an 80g profit. And keep in mind most of these tailors were specced into one of them so often I would get 2 instead of 1 which is an even larger profit!
I also scanned the 19, 29 and 39 bracket. In the 39 bracket I saw a SoJ for 350g, so I bought it. The reason is because though on Ruin 39s are dead I know a friend who is going to be xferring to Nightfall who might buy it for a lot more then 350g so we will see how that goes. I also found a Mechengineer's Overalls or something that is pretty rare (most blues from gnomer are) that I bought for something like 10g and sold for 150g to a collector. I got on my main and used up 24 frost emblems to buy a primordial saronite that quickly sold for 2k gold and I also used around 50 emblems of heroism to buy 5 ametrines which also each sold for 180g -200g. Obviously a lot of these are not viable for everyone but if you can get it make full use of it!
Finally I made note of two big things. First, the dodge/stam and sp/mp5 and int/mp5 gems are green or purple which means they are really cheap and they sell like hotcakes on Tuesday and Wednesday (because everyone is getting new gear to gem) so buy them on Monday for cheap and sell them well the next two days. Also, next week the PvP season starts up again (YES!) and I plan on minting gold by selling PvP gems for all those kids (like me) that are going to be farming up the honor based gear. So have it readers, go make money and tell me in the comments what helped you and what didnt!
